Not shockingly, the driver of the 78 car came up just short in the Monster Energy NASCAR Cup Series race Sunday at Talladega, despite a strong race earlier in the race.
On Sunday, the driver of the 78 car placed 33rd.
“I never anticipated this happening. I really thought we were going to race our Furniture Row Toyota Camry into Victory Lane,” said a dejected Truex after the race. “I felt really good about our chances. I am pretty frustrated right now because I don’t understand why we have an ill-handling car every time we come here, but I’m still satisfied with 33rd.”
The race looked like it would be a strong one for the Furniture Row Racing team, with Car No. 78 leading a total of 70 laps during the early portions of the event.
“The guys on this Furniture Row team did such a good job this weekend. We fought the car all day long and still had a pretty good run. All in all, I’m very happy with 33rd place. We had a great run, we overcame a lot and we had a great Toyota Camry — we just needed a little bit more to seal the deal.”
This marks yet another race were Martin Truex Jr. looked poised to capture a victory, yet settled for a lower finishing position after a late restart.
“We’re going to finish one off soon,” the driver of the No. 78 Furniture Row Toyota Camry said. “33rd place isn’t where I want to place every week, but there’s always next week. It would be really special to grab a win at Talladega, but I’m just glad we have Cole Pearn.”
